WESTBOROUGH, Mass. — The rumble of heavy machinery will be hard to miss at the Westborough Post Office now that construction on a new retirement living community is in full swing.
Hawthorn Retirement Group began the project in June, but the main construction has only recently begun. The completion date is advertised as late next summer.
The 141,000-square-foot facility will offer studio, one- and two-bedroom apartments, construction manager Randy Riggs said. Amenities include a full dining room, gym, media room with a 133-inch television and beauty salon, among others. Units can be rented by anyone 55 or older.
"We develop, build, own and operate these facilities," Riggs said. Colson & Colson is the builder, while Hawthorne Retirement Group staffs and runs the facility. The company builds 10 to 12 such facilities each year nationwide, in the United Kingdom and in Canada, he said.
The location was not chosen because of its close proximity to the Westborough Senior Center, but it will likely be a selling point, Riggs said.
Not much has been planned about how the new development will coexist with the senior center because it is still a year from completion, said Alma DeManche, director of the Westborough Council on Aging.
Spaces in the 124-unit facility can be reserved by calling the Hawthorn Retirement Group at 866-893-2111.
