NORTHBOROUGH, Mass. — The judges have spoken: First prize in this year's Applefest Bake-Off will go to Northborough resident Kristen Recchia, who entered a stylish apple spice cake.

"Apple cake is hard," said CocoBeni pastry chef Mary Beth Benison, one of the judges. "Usually they can be dense. That one was perfect."

Benison joined judges Kate Shaw, Applefest Committee Chair Michelle Gillespie, Northborough-Southborough Superintendent Charles Gobron and Wegmans bakery manager Matt Titus at the Northborough Senior Center, where they sampled each entry.

The judges awarded second prize to Priscilla Hutchins's apple strudel and third prize to Kathleen McShane's apple pizza.

There was also a special category for sugar-free, diabetic-friendly dishes. Both first and second prize were awarded to Rose Lee, who entered a dish of baked apples and one of marsala chia.

After the results were tallied, the judges admitted that it was a difficult decision.

However, they weren't complaining about spending an hour in a room full of desserts.
