NORTHBOROUGH, Mass. — When you go out to buy your favorite Girl Scout cookies this year, Northborough scouts ask that you buy a box or two to be sent to troops stationed overseas.
For the second year in a row, Girl Scout Cadette Troop 30680 is teaming up with AMVETS Post 495 to ship cookies to Massachusetts men and women who are serving in Afghanistan.
"Last year, I asked if they would take Girl Scout cookies," Troop Leader Sue DesMarais said of AMVETS, a national veterans' service organization. "They were like, 'Oh my God, yes.'"
Along with the other Northborough Girl Scout troops, the girls in Troop 30680 are hoping to beat last year's total collection of 104 boxes before the cookie sale ends on March 15. So far, DesMarais, said, the troop has collected 38 boxes.
"There was a man who came up — he was a Vietnam vet — and he said he remembered how awesome it was to get a care package from home," DesMarais said. "I think he bought four boxes."
Boxes, which cost $4 each, can be donated anywhere Girl Scouts are selling cookies. DesMarais recommended that people buy from girls whom they've bought from in the past. "Many, many people have Girl Scouts in their life," she said.
However, those who don't know a Girl Scouts can still find out where they're selling cookies by emailing gscwm30680@gmail.com.
