NORTHBOROUGH, Mass. — The Northborough Lions Club recently named Dr. Richard Martino the recipient of its 2012 Community Service Award.

Martino, an optometrist for 40 years, has kept an office in Northborough for the last 37. He has been an important contributor to the Northborough Lions Club sight program for many years. Under such a program, when a Northborough school nurse finds a child who needs eye glasses, the nurse contacts the Lions, who contact Martino. Martino then provides the child with a free eye exam and eyeglasses.

Martino has also served as the fire chaplain to the Northborough Fire Department for 15 years, and helped establish the Corps of Fire Chaplains in 1999. The organization ministers to firefighters and families who have suffered tragedies. Most notably, the chaplains were deployed to New York City following the terrorists attacks of Sept. 11, 2001.

The Northborough Lions Club also made a $500 donation in Martino's honor to a charity of his choice. Martino chose the Northborough Food Pantry.
