GRAFTON, Mass. - The scenes in the video are outside the norm for the Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine: A giant pink glove chases cancer throughout the campus, occasionally on a horse, to the tune of "Evacuate the Dancefloor."
Staffers at the Grafton-based Tufts University veterinary college are hoping their contribution to the Pink Glove Dance Video ouevre will help them in the fight against breast cancer.
"We are so excited about this," said Karen Monahan, supply coordinator for the Cummings School. "We're hoping a lot of people will vote for us."
The video is an entry in Medline's annual Pink Glove Dance Video competition, in which hospitals, nursing homes, schools and other organizations in the United States and Canada compete. This marks the Cummings School's first entry.
"We said, 'Oh my God, we want to do this,'" Monahan said. "It's a morale booster, and it's a great cause."
The school has chosen the UMass Memorial Medical Center's Comprehensive Breast Center as its charity. The top video receives $10,000 for its charity, with second drawing $5,000 and third place getting $2,000.
Voting begins Friday, Oct. 12, and closes Oct. 26. Supporters can visit the website to vote for their favorite video.
About 90 people at the Cummings School participated in the video, which was shot over the summer. Monahan, in the giant pink glove costume, rode a horse and a golf cart as she chased a black-clad character bearing the letter "C" for cancer throughout the campus. Dancing campus staff, alpacas, dogs and even a freed hawk all play a role in cancer's capture.
The winners will be announced Nov. 2.
