The Friendly's restaurants in Shrewsbury and Westborough closed for good on Monday after the company filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in October 2011.
The locations in the White City Shopping Center in Shrewsbury and on 303 Turnpike Road in Westborough closed after the company could not restructure lease arrangements with the building's landlord.
"While we were able to successfully restructure lease agreements for a number of locations, unfortunately, we were unable to reach an acceptable agreement for some restaurants," wrote Friendly's spokesperson Maura Tobias in a press release. "Therefore, we have made the difficult decision to close them effective at the close of business on Sunday Jan. 8."
Tobias also wrote that the company believed rents did not "reflect current market conditions and were significantly impacting the viability of underperforming restaurants."
In the latest round of closings, 10 Massachusetts locations were shut down.
Another Westborough location, on 96 Turnpike Road in Westborough was also shut down in October when the company originally filed for bankruptcy.

So sad that the Friendly's location at White City has closed. That restaruant has been a Shrewsbury landmark location to meet friends and family for decades. It will be sorely missed. My elderly mother is heartbroken. It is a shame an agreement could not be reached between the coporation and the new landlord of the plaza. Another victim of the economic downturn that effects the community at large.
