SHREWSBURY, Mass. — Last year, Central Massachusetts experienced a Halloween blizzard. Could a Halloween hurricane be in the forecast this year?
That's a worst-case scenario as Tropical Storm Sandy intensifies and moves slowly to the north, Shrewsbury weather analyst Jim Arnold said. The storm is expected to hit the Bahamas by Saturday morning before possibly moving up the East Coast.
"The model representation for Halloween day is the worst case situation for southern New England," Arnold said.
Last year, Hurricane Irene disrupted the first day of school in many Central Mass. communities, knocking out power throughout the region. The "Snowtober" snowstorm on Oct. 29, 2011 dropped 15 inches of very unseasonable snow on the area, again dropping power lines and limiting trick-or-treating for the area's young ghosts and goblins.
Arnold stressed that it is still unknown if Tropical Storm Sandy will disrupt this year's Halloween.
"We just don't know what track Sandy will take when she exits the Bahamas," Arnold said. "It is about a week before Sandy would impact Southern New England if she does at all, and in that time atmospheric changes will take place and we will be better able to identify what if any impacts we will see here. Any forecast of her future track now has to be a low- confidence forecast at this time."
