NORTHBOROUGH, Mass. — Vandals broke into Algonquin Regional High School and stole five letters from the school's name on the front of the building Wednesday night, according to police.

They broke a skylight to gain access through the roof of the school, according to Detective Sgt. Brian Griffin of the Northborough Police Department.

"It appears they were drinking alcohol," Griffin said, adding that a beer can was found near the broken skylight.

Griffin said that there will be "fairly extensive costs associated" with replacing the letters. Superintendent Charles Gobron said that he is still waiting for a full damage estimate.

"It's upsetting," Gobron said. "We put so much pride in our building and people work so hard."

He said he does not look forward to finding money in the already tight budget to pay for repairs. "We don't really want to be spending money on vandalism," he said.

Anyone with information on the crime can call Northborough police at 508-393-1515.
