NORTHBOROUGH, Mass. — The Algonquin Regional High School Music Department recently named two student Musicians of the Month for January.
Freshman Mike McCormack and junior Carly Achilles were the first students honored this year for having "taken their musical education to the next level," according to a statement prepared by the Northborough-Southborough Music Association.
McCormack, a multiinstrumentalist, plays string bass in the Orchestra and guitar in Jazz Ensemble I. He helped put together a jazz combo that performed at the Holiday Concert and recently volunteered to play drums in this year's musical.
"I am honored and lucky to be part of such a rich music program at Algonquin," McCormack said. He plans to continue performing music in the future.
Achilles, a choral student, is a member of the alto section of the Concert Choir and is an accompanist for the Choir and Symphonic Band.
Music is an important part of her life as well. "When the opportunity to join choir came up when selecting my courses, I jumped on it," Achilles said. "I know I'm not going to be the next 'American Idol' or be the vocal soloist in choir, but I love to use my gift of playing piano to contribute to our wonderful music program."
