NORTHBOROUGH, Mass. — For the second year in a row, the Algonquin varsity swim team finished its season at the top.

The Tomahawks finished first out of 12 teams in the Mid-Wach League Invitational Swimming and Diving Championship meet Jan 31 with a total team score of 710 points.

With this win, Algonquin capped off an undefeated 14-0-0 season.

A number of swimmers posted strong times to lead the team to victory. In the boys 200-yard freestyle, sophomore Drew Beland finished first with a time of 1:51.12, qualifying for the state tournament. Beland also won the boys' 500-yard freestyle with a state-qualifying time of 4:57.74. In the girls' 200-yard freestyle, senior Claudia Capria finished first with a time of 2:03.93. She also qualified for the state tournament.

"Yes, we have some phenomenal competitors on our team, but this win is not only about the first-place finishes," coach Jean Fedak said. "Our achievement is in great part due to our depth on the team."

Many swimmers, she added, finished in the top 16 in their respective events, which helped Algonquin pile up points throughout the meet.

Calling the team "incredibly spirited," Fedak lauded the senior co-captains, Eleni Bautz and Carl Lindgren, for their leadership. She also credited assistant coaches Paul Renfrew, Chris Peterson and Jenna Williams, who "have worked diligently to inspire the team to strive for personal bests and to improve stroke technique."
