NORTHBOROUGH, Mass. — Nearly half of the Algonquin High School varsity wrestling squad recently qualified for the Massachusetts State Wrestling Tournament, which will be held this weekend at Salem High School.
To qualify, individual wrestlers must place in the top five in the Central Massachusetts Sectional Tournament, which was held this past weekend at Newtown South High School.
“Our wrestlers competed aggressively and fought hard," head coach Brian Kramer said. "The Central Mass sectional has some of the most difficult wrestlers, and competitive high schools in the state.”
Algonquin junior captain Alex Mazzola finished first in the 170 pound weight class, securing a spot at the state tournament. Joining him will be fellow junior captain Joe Cozzolino, who took second place in the 120 pound class.
Senior grappler Christian Saccone finished second in the 126 pound class, while freshman Austin Roche, at 113 pounds, took fourth place.
The wrestlers will be joined in Salem by qualifying teammates Nate Morrell, David Wrin and Sam Schick.
Senior heavyweight James Officer will be unable to compete due to an injury.
“Our guys gave it their all and I am proud of them,” assistant coach Derek Grant said.
