Shrewsbury Boys Cross Country Wins At Algonquin

NORTHBOROUGH, Mass. — Shrewsbury High School's cross country team came away with a resounding victory on a rainy Tuesday at Algonquin Regional High School, according to Shrewsbury coach Jim Smith.

Shrewsbury's top finishers legged out a 19-38 win over previously unbeaten Algonquin. Both teams are now 3-1.

Senior Dan Wentworth led the Colonials, who placed five runners in the top six spots on the 3-mile course, Smith said.

"Sophomores Tyler O'Keefe and Jake Starvaski had outstanding races as they almost caught Greg Palken, a senior and 2011 League All-Star," Smith said. "Senior Captain Dan Mortimer and junior Will Shipman also ran very well," placing fifth and sixth.

Smith said there was never doubt that the Colonials would come out on top, as Mortimer started fast and maintained a 50- to 75-yard lead during the entire race.

Shrewsbury hosts North Middlesex at 4 p.m. Tuesday.
