Stamford Marriott Dishes Up Chocolate, Desserts, Wine To Benefit Shelter
STAMFORD, Conn. -- This year, make it a New Year's resolution to indulge in more chocolate and treat yourself — all while helping the homeless shelter in Stamford. On Feb. 4 from 6 to 9 p.m. the Stamford Marriott Hotel & Spa, 243 Tresser Blvd., will serve up the eighth annual Chocolate, Dessert & Wine Lover’s Evening — a Stamford Valentine tradition where fine wine meets decadent desserts.
“The Chocolate, Dessert & Wine Lover’s Evening has become a beloved community tradition, and an important fundraiser for the shelter,” said Andrew Barer, director of development.

Nicholas Galasso, 98, Of Fishkill
FISHKILL, N.Y. – Nicholas Galasso, a resident of Fishkill, died Friday, Jan. 15. He was 98.
He was born on May 23, 1917, in the Bronx to Giuseppe and Maria (Potenza) Galasso.
Galasso served with the U.S. Army in World War II, landing on Utah Beach during the invasion of Normandy.
He married Jeanne Helen Thiebert on April 6, 1946.
He had a long career with A & P, and retired in 1979 as produce manager.

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. -- Jesus A. Lavariega, a resident of Poughkeepsie, died on Friday, Jan. 16. He was 19.He was born in Poughkeepsie on Feb. 26, 1996.
Lavariega attended Poughkeepsie High School, where he was a member of the crew team, and Dutchess Community College. He worked at Hannaford's Store in Wappingers Falls, in the seafood department. He also loved to skateboard and swim.

Henry Rough, 92, Of Beekman
BEEKMAN, N.Y. -- Henry Rough, a resident of Beekman, died Sunday, Jan.17. He was 92.Rough volunteered for service during World War II, serving in Brindisi, Italy, with the Army Air Corps as an aircraft mechanic. After the war, he returned to finish high school while still wearing his corporal's uniform.
Rough became a corrections officer for New York state in 1952, serving at Green Haven, Matteawan/Fishkill, and Downstate correctional facilities. He retired in 1983 after 31 years of service.

FAIRFIELD, Conn. – Wladyslawa Gladys Pijska, a resident of Fairfield, died Saturday, Jan. 16. She was 89.
Born in Dluzec, Poland to Pawel and Victoria Gruca. During the second World War, she survived the German occupation of Poland and internment in the Klagenfurt labor camp. Following the war, Pijska enlisted in the Polish army as a member of the "ATS" or women's auxiliary service. Her duties saw her stationed in Penley, Wales, where she worked as a waitress for medical staff at Penley Polish Hospital No. 3.
